The therapy process.
People often feel uncomfortable meeting a therapist for the first time. The first meeting is awkward for both the therapist and client. I thought I would share what I am assessing during the first session.
My main goal in the first session is to ascertain if we are a good fit and if I can assist or should I refer you to someone who is more suited to your presenting problem. I do this by getting to know you, your history, your current situation and your personality. Listening carefully to what you are saying for signs of anxiety, hopelessness, frustration or anger. We explore social and sociocultural factors that may be contributing to your functioning. I not only look for problems but also think about your strengths and identify supportive relationships that may be beneficial to your healing.
You are also assessing my ability to hold your presenting problem with the care and respect that it deserves. Not all clients and therapist are a good fit. We will discuss this together.
