Suicide Help

Suicide is prevalent in South Africa, on average, 3000 people die by suicide every day (www.gov.za). Every 40 seconds, a family is irrevocably altered, after hearing the news, that a family member has ended their life.
Attempting to understand why people take their own life is complicated. Experiencing suicidal thoughts and urges are relatively common. Millions of people experience suicidal ideation, have a plan, execute and survive. Mental illness or lack of access to services, and substance use disorder may increase risks. Hopelessness is often an early predictor of suicidal ideation. If you or someone you know is struggling, it’s crucial to seek help. Talking about suicidal ideation does not increase the risk of suicide. It is important to speak openly about these thoughts. Simply sitting with someone in their pain can be a powerful remedy for feelings of hopelessness in the short run. Reach out to crisis centres, such as SADAG 0800 567 567 or Lifeline 0861 322 322. In an emergency, go directly to your nearest hospital or clinic for immediate assistance.
